How Fast Do Sylvester Palms Grow?

Growth rate, mature height, roots and lifespan, before you buy.

Sylvester palms are slow to moderate growers. Published estimates run from about one to two feet of new growth per year in full sun, and the University of Florida notes the species can reach up to 50 feet over many years. That slow pace is why most buyers choose a field-grown palm that already has the trunk height they want.

How Fast Does a Sylvester Palm Grow in Florida?

Sylvester palms (Phoenix sylvestris) are described by the University of Florida IFAS fact sheet as slow growing. Nursery and garden sources put the figure at roughly one to two feet of growth per year, and they do not all agree, so treat any single number as an estimate rather than a promise. We do not have Florida growth measurements of our own to publish, and we would rather say that than invent one.

What changes the pace is the site. A palm in full sun with steady moisture grows faster than one in shade or dry sand. A palm that has just been moved will pause while its roots recover, which our transplant shock guide explains.

In practice that means the first year after planting is about rooting in, not height. Do not judge a newly planted palm by how much taller it looks after one season. Judge it by new fronds opening from the center of the crown, which is the clearest sign that it has settled in and is growing.

How Tall Does a Sylvester Palm Get?

The University of Florida fact sheet says the palm can reach up to 50 feet. Other sources quote a lower figure of around 40 feet. The honest answer is that a mature palm is a tall tree, and it takes decades to get there. Plan for a palm that is much taller than the one you plant, with a dense, round crown that casts light shade.

What Does Clear Trunk Mean, and Why Is It How Palms Are Sized?

Clear trunk is the length of bare trunk from the ground to the base of the fronds. Overall height includes the crown. Because a palm adds trunk slowly, clear trunk is the number that tells you how far along it is. At Sylvestris Tree Farms the palms we sell range from 7 feet overall height up to 9 feet of clear trunk, with some specimens over 20 feet overall. See the full range on The Palms.

How Big Are the Roots, and Is It Safe Near a Pool or Pavers?

The UF fact sheet notes that older trees tend to show aerial roots at the base of the trunk. We do not have a measured root spread to quote. As a precaution, keep the trunk back from pool edges, pavers, drains and foundations, and leave room for the base to widen. Our pros and cons guide covers placement near pools in more detail.

How Long Do Sylvester Palms Live?

We could not find an authoritative lifespan figure for Sylvester palms in Florida landscapes, so we do not quote one. What we can say is that this is a long-term tree. You are planting it for the decades it takes to mature, which is a good reason to choose the right spot and size at the start.

Does Buying a Larger Field-Grown Palm Skip the Slow Years?

Mostly, yes. A larger palm does not grow faster, but it arrives with trunk height that a small palm would take years to build. Our palms are field grown in Vero Beach, and we have grown them since 2004. If you want a finished look now, start with the trunk height you want and let it keep growing from there. Cost depends on that height and grade, as we explain in what determines the cost of a Sylvester palm.

What We Recommend

Pick the clear trunk height you want to see this year, not the size you hope for in ten years. Give the palm full sun, room for the crown and base to widen, and steady watering while it establishes (see the care guide). Call the farm at 772-778-3006 and tell us the spot, and we will point you to a size that fits.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many feet per year does a Sylvester palm grow?

Published estimates vary, but most describe roughly one to two feet of growth per year in full sun, which is slow to moderate. Shade, poor soil and inconsistent watering slow it further.

Will a Sylvester palm outgrow a small yard?

It can. The University of Florida describes the species as reaching up to 50 feet, so it suits a yard with room for a tall palm and a wide crown. Plan the placement around the mature size, not the size on planting day.

Do Sylvester palm roots damage sidewalks or pools?

We do not have a measured figure for root spread. As a precaution, keep the trunk back from pool edges, pavers and foundations, and ask us about your site before you choose a spot.

How long do Sylvester palms live?

We have not found an authoritative lifespan figure for Florida landscapes, so we do not quote one. They are long-lived trees that you plant for decades.

Does a larger field-grown palm grow faster?

No. A larger palm is simply further along. It keeps growing at the normal pace for the species, which is why buyers who want height now choose a palm that already has it.
